Asus U44SG Rocks Nvidia 610M Graphics Netbook Live Compact Computers

Asus’s U44SG is a new arrival from CES and it’s one of the laptops the company is aiming at gamers as well, looking for a truly portable, but capable computer for gaming on the go. The unit we caught was running Portal 2- and doing it quite well, if you ask me.

With detail levels on high (I suppose) the gameplay was smooth, so I guess anything close to Portal 2 in terms of system requirements should  run just as smooth as this.

The 14 inch U44SG can be equipped with Sandy Bridge processors, ranging from Core i3-2310M to the no nonsense Core i7-2640M. The laptop can take in as much as 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, while for storage you can go as far as 750 GB of mechanical storage or 320 GB of fast SSD storage.

The U44SG comes of course with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics, but can be equipped with Nvidia’s 610M video card as well, that comes with 1 GB of dedicated memory. If you want to switch between the two and save up battery life, you can do so by using the Optimus Technology, which won’t require for you to restart the computer in the process.

As for battery life, Asus claims that you can get as much as 10 hours of autonomy, but that will probably happen only if you skip gaming, as using the video card and pumping up the processor will drain the juice maker much faster.

The display has a standard resolution of 1366 x 768 and seems to be quite glossy from what I’ve seen in the video, but glossier means brighter, which might pay off in dark room gaming. As for ports, you get all the usual, like USB 2.0 and 3.0 and HDMI, and Asus also treats us with Altec Lansing sound, hopefully better than the one they had on previous laptops in 2011.

That’s all for now, but don’t forget to check our hands on video with the U44SG straight from CES 2012. Enjoy.
